A LETTER FROM TERRIE HILL, ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF FABULOUS FRIENDS FOR AFRICA
Our group started as Five Fabulous Friends at Fifty – 5 dear friends reaching the “half century” milestone together in 2008. I had contemplated a 50th birthday party/ dance for several years, yet really wanted to do something more significant, more lasting than a self-focused birthday extravaganza. In what we hoped was a God-inspired idea, we, along with two other friends we brought on board as “advisors,” started brainstorming about a joint birthday party to benefit relief projects in Africa. (We all were connected with or had been touched in some way by the needs in Africa.)
We are not professional fundraisers, but with God’s blessing, it all came together. On Valentine’s Day 2008, we celebrated our birthdays with a wonderful night filled with friends, dancing and desserts. But beyond the fun of the evening, the bigger story is that almost $50,000 was donated to African Leadership through the event.
The whole experience was a great adventure for us – to celebrate our 50th birthdays with friends, to experience the overwhelming generosity for African Leadership through the event, and then to see the fruit of that generosity in the pictures and stories of the women and children who benefited from our supported projects. And so we decided to do it again.
Since we were officially “over 50,” and adding more friends to our group, we became the Fabulous Friends for Africa. In ten years, more than $700,000 has been raised for Africa.
The Story Continues!
A LETTER FROM EDIE HIGH (DAUGHTER OF FOUNDING FFA MEMBER, TERRIE HILL)
Over the past 10 years, I have been amazed to watch my mother and several friends grow into the ‘Fabulous Friends for Africa’, hosting an annual Valentine’s party which has raised over $700,000 for African Leadership. Their involvement has changed each one of them—it has built unique bonds between the women as they’ve worked diligently alongside one another, it has led some of the women to visit Africa to see firsthand the work they’ve supported through African Leadership, and it’s humbled them as they’ve seen their friends and families in Nashville join them in supporting the party and this organization.
After 10 years of hosting the Valentine’s benefit party, the founding Fabulous Friends decided it was time to pass the torch to a younger generation, and naturally looked first to their daughters, many of whom live in Nashville and have become committed supporters of the event and African Leadership. Several of the daughters and a handful of friends who are long-time supporters of the party, came together, and, after careful consideration and prayer, decided we wanted to contribute our time and resources beyond our careers and families, to link arms and host the 2018 Valentine’s party to support the transformational work of African Leadership.
Our guests can expect many of the same components of the event—a live band, buffet dinner, and a silent auction, plus a few new surprises this year. We are thrilled to continue this tradition and hope to see you there on February 10th, 2018!
